The coronavirus crisis has shown us that some companies aren’t worth supporting and that some celebrities should probably put down their phones, but it’s also shown us that there are always, always going to be people who step up in a time of need to support others in whatever way they can.

Designer Christian Siriano, who many remember as Project Runway’s season four winner who has maintained an incredibly successful career ever since, has directed his sewing team to redirect their efforts towards making masks to distribute to New York healthcare workers.

“If @NYGovCuomo says we need masks my team will help make some,” he tweeted on Friday. “I have a full sewing team still on staff working from home that can help.”

We're in contact with @CSiriano. Appreciate his help so much.

Hand sewn masks are far from the ideal option to protect our doctors and nurses from coming down with COVID-19, but any masks are still better than none, and as most local governments throughout the country are currently running desperately low on supplies, many are turning to creating masks out of whatever they can.

Siriano has subsequently shared the process of designing the masks, so as to show others how they need to function.

We will be making a few versions of this in order to help as many people as we can. Here is the process so we can get a perfect fit. More to come thank you everyone we hope to get these to the right people ASAP pic.twitter.com/Pow7H4D0xT

And he also shared that prototypes are on the way, he’s also working to get approval that the design they came up with will function in a way that helps keep healthcare workers safe, and is urging others who want to help to do the same.

Prototypes are happening more updates by next week. pic.twitter.com/xBPqFtiX0E

Thanks everyone for all the support. We are making waves and working on getting approvals before we start anything. It’s very important before anyone does anything to help, please make sure what you are making is safe and hopefully FDA approved. We must be smart.
