SAVE WATER, WEAR WATER < LESS DENIM

Part PSA, part ‘Style’ post — we’re wearing jeans with a conscience… and good butt support. We’ll never skimp on that.

In partnership with Levi’s in support of World Water Day on March 22, 2019.

Here’s a fact: it takes an average of 1,800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton to produce just one pair of regular ol’ blue jeans.

Take that fact and think about how easily we take clean and safe water for granted on a more personal level, sometimes taking longer showers than we should, running a dishwasher with only a few dishes, or even letting the sink run when we brush our teeth.

It’s no surprise to anyone other than our mother’s who think we’re angels sent from the heavens, we’re guilty of all three.

But, here’s another fact: billions of people around the world don’t even have access to clean or safe water. And when they do, marginalized groups are the ones still left out. Women, children, refugees, indigenous peoples, disabled persons and others.

Suddenly wearing a pair of denim becomes a more serious thought — a thought by which Levi’s has already spent years upon years diving into.

Just take the two pairs of Levi’s jeans we’re wearing here (512 Slim Taper Fit on Brock, and 513 Slim Straight on Chris) — both of which are crafted from Levi’s Water<Less technology, including processes such as reusing water during production. Other Water<Less techniques (more than 20 to date) include using less and less water for finishes that simply require less to create.

By the numbers, Levi’s has already ‘saved more than 2 billion liters and recycled more than 200 million liters of water,’ with ‘more than 40% of all Levi’s products being made now with Water<Less techniques,’ aiming for 80% by 2020.

That’s denim with a global conscience, thinking about the person across the world traveling miles upon miles just to access a clean, safe well of water. We all can do our part to reduce the amount of water we waste, helping the world gain access to a human right we all deserve.

Clean. Safe. Water.

So, let’s break it down even further. Here’s what we can all do to conserve water:

  1. Wash your jeans only when needed. There’s no need to wash after every wear; even just hanging them out in the sun will do the job if they’re not that dirty.
  2. Take showers instead of baths. Even better, save water, shower together 😛
  3. Let the rain wash your car. It’s free, thanks to Mother Nature!
  4. Use a fully loaded dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand — who knew a dishwasher used less water than hand-washing??
  5. Wash your face in the shower, instead of letting it run in the sink while you suds up.

And that’s just the start. We can all do our part 🙂

Oh, and we can’t forget about everything else we’re wearing. Here’s what we have on, including Levi’s Vintage pieces that required no additional water to create and sell (another step in the process of reducing water waste):
